04Maker safety

THE RULES ON THE WALL.

The children do not operate hot equipment unsupervised. This is not a disclaimer — it is the actual list taped above the printer bench.

Dad only
  • Hotend, nozzle changes and anything above 60°C
  • Electricity, power strips and firmware
  • Payments, refunds and online accounts
  • Shipping labels and customer addresses
  • Machine maintenance and belt tensioning
  • Any tool with a blade
The makers can
  • Sketching and designing on the computer
  • Choosing colours and filament combinations
  • Photographing finished products
  • Testing, bending, dropping and reporting
  • Packing simple orders (no blades, no tape gun)
  • Working out cost, price and profit with Dad
House rules
  • The printer never runs while nobody is home.
  • Printing happens in a ventilated room, door open.
  • Nobody touches the plate until it reads under 40°C.
  • A smoke alarm sits above the printer bench.
  • If something smells wrong, we stop the job and tell Dad.
